Being a counsellor was all I ever wanted, until I discovered Somatic Experiencing®

I was working for a rape and sexual violence project in Birmingham and seeing clients in other settings where trauma was a dominating issue for them. I started to notice that a large number of clients were experiencing physical issues as well as emotional struggles. It seemed to be too much of a coincidence for there not to be a link.

Somatic Experiencing® came onto my radar and the light bulb went off!

The link between physical symptoms, fibromyalgia, IBS, chronic pain and more, became obvious. Of course our nervous systems respond to emotional input and as a species that does anything to survive, our nervous systems adapt to do what they think is best to protect us. 

This protection shows up in many ways, not just physical, but also in patterns that we repeat even when we know they do not serve us anymore. Not speaking up for ourselves because as a child this might have meant being punished, ignored or shamed. People-pleasing because we only felt safe when our caregivers were ok. Experiencing extreme anger at small things because anger is the only response we know to keep us safe from what we perceive to be a threat to our safety or integrity.

SE has transformed both how I work and also how I live. 

I offer sessions face-to-face in South Birmingham. I also work online but personally prefer the value of connection that is achieved by being in the room with you, particularly for somatic work.
